The Little Prince

The Little Prince and his rose by Antoine de Saint-Exupery

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery is my all time favorite book. The first time I read it, I was in the sixth grade. I loved it, but I didn't quite understand it. There were many aspects of the book that I knew were way beyond my understanding due to my age and lack of life experience. On my 16th birthday, I purchased a copy for myself as a personal gift. I read it a few hours later, and I embraced the symbolism and metaphors that were hidden throughout the story. Even then, I didn't fully grasp the meanings in their entirety, but I understood more of it than the previous time. A few years later, I went through a really bad breakup, and I decided to read it again. I don't know if it was the broken heart or if I was now older and wiser, but this time I understood everything. It was then I saw the book and all of its beauty.

The entire book moves me. I enjoy the plot, the characters and its different themes. There are various quotes throughout the book that whenever I read it, I must stop and ponder them and their meaning. I want to share a few of these quotes with you. I would like you to read them, think about their meaning and examine their significance.

Read and enjoy!

Quotes:

  • "Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them."
  • "Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far..."
  • "It is such a secret place, the land of tears."
  • "It is much more difficult to judge oneself than to judge others."
  • "Conceited people never hear anything but praise."
  • "What is essential is invisible to the eye."
  • "But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart..."
  • "One runs the risk of weeping a little, if one lets himself to be tamed..."

I just wrote this... I really love the story and I really love my son.

A fox has slipped into my yard, but the little prince never followed. This cruel absence is felt as...
